The local SEO checklist for service businesses
When someone nearby searches for what you do, you want to be in the map results, not on page three. These twelve steps cover what matters most, in the order we use for our own clients.
Local SEO is how a business shows up when people search for a service near them, such as “emergency plumber” or “dentist near me”. Most of those searches end in a call, a booking or a visit within a day, so showing up there is often worth more than ranking for broad keywords.
Why local SEO matters
For local searches, Google shows a map with a short list of businesses above the normal results. Google says local ranking is based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches what the person searched for.
- Distance: how close you are to the searcher or the location they typed.
- Prominence: how well known your business is, including reviews, links and mentions across the web.
You cannot change where your customers are, but you can do a lot about relevance and prominence.
Your Google Business Profile
Your free Google Business Profile is the single most important piece of local SEO. Claim it, verify it, and fill in every field.
Pick the right primary category
Your primary category tells Google what you are. Choose the most specific one that fits, for example “Cosmetic dentist” rather than just “Dentist” if that is your main work. Add secondary categories for other services you offer.
Keep your details consistent
Use exactly the same business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) on your profile, your website and every directory. Small differences, like “Suite 5” on one site and “#5” on another, are fine, but a different phone number or an old address confuses both Google and customers.
Reviews
Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people choose you. The steady flow matters more than a one-time burst.
- Ask every satisfied customer, ideally right after the job, with a direct link to your review form.
- Reply to every review. Thank people for good ones, and answer bad ones calmly with how you will put it right.
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. It breaks Google’s rules and, in the US, the FTC’s rules on fake reviews.
A short, honest reply to a bad review often wins more trust than ten five-star reviews.
Your website
Your profile links to your website, and Google reads both. Make it easy to understand what you do and where.
- One page per main service. A page for “teeth whitening” can rank for teeth whitening; a single “services” page rarely can.
- Location pages with real detail. If you serve several towns, create a page for each with genuine local information, such as projects you completed there, not the same text with the city name swapped.
- Clear contact details. Put your address, phone number and a map on your contact page, and your phone number in the header.
- Speed and mobile. Most local searches happen on phones. A slow site loses callers before they see your number.
Citations and links
Citations are mentions of your business name, address and phone on other sites, such as Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the Better Business Bureau and directories for your industry. Make sure the main ones are claimed and correct.
Links from local websites help too: your chamber of commerce, local news, suppliers, sponsors and community groups. One link from a respected local site is worth more than many from random directories.

How to measure results
| What to track | Where to find it | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Calls, direction requests and website clicks | Google Business Profile performance | Monthly |
| Searches that show your site | Google Search Console | Monthly |
| Number and rating of reviews | Your Business Profile | Weekly |
| Leads from the website | Your forms and call tracking | Weekly |
Local SEO builds up over months, not days. Keep the basics consistent, keep reviews coming in, and keep your site useful, and the results compound.
